Ayat homestay

Ayat al-Mardawi’s experience has attracted both international tourists and local Palestinians’ interest, because she succeeded in transforming her house into one of the most active homestays in Palestine. Although she has been a host for less than two years, Ayat proved she was born to be a host.

Since she was a little girl, Ayat was fond of cooking in her mother’s small kitchen. She would return from school and spend time in the kitchen with her mother observing and learning how to make many of the most famous Palestinian dishes such as Musakhan and Maqlouba. Although she was a good student who wanted to continue her studies, she got married at the age of 15 and became a housewife and a mother.

As a housewife, Ayat polished her cooking skills and become one of the most renowned cooks in her town Arraba, southwest of Jenin. Although she was only a housewife, Ayat had the ambition to run her own business and make use of her culinary skills. She baked and sold pastries to students during lunch break in seven schools in Arraba and around. With the help and support of her husband, she was able to generate a second income to support her relatively large family.

Ayat first began her involvement in the alternative tourism sector when approached by Rozana to host groups and cook for tourists who are passing through Arraba. She was an active member and served dozens of groups before she realized that she would love to open her house to tourists visiting Palestine. Thinking of it as a family business, Ayat and her husband refurbished the second floor to be used by their guests.

She launched a Facebook page that has over 700 likes and growing, mostly people who visited her and enjoyed her family’s company. After almost two years of being involved in the homestays scheme, Ayat believes she is living her ultimate dream. She is now a financially productive member in the family and capable of boosting her family’s income by doing what she loves the most with the people closest to her heart, her children.

Although she doesn’t speak perfect English, Ayat was able to leave the best impression and maintain friendships with people from all over the globe with the help of her her children who speak good English. Ayat al-Mardawi Guesthouse Facebook profile is filled with positive and friendly comments from foreigners who were dazzled by her generosity, outstanding hospitality and smile that never leaves her face.

Spending time with Ayat and her family is not only fun, but also educational. She believes that her work is not only to to provide the family with a much needed second income, but also to help reflect the real image about Palestinians. “In times when everyone is talking about how Muslims and Arabs are terrorists, I prove to my guests that we are friendly and normal like them, and would do the impossible to safeguard and entertain them.”

Ayat’s highest priority is to make her guests feel safe, comfortable, welcome and happy and she feels ecstatic when one of her guests returns or sends a greeting card with another guest. She is proud that she provides her guests with organic vegetables and fruits and meat. Ayat’s work is to serve her guests in the best way possible and she would never settler for less than perfect.
