When Bassemadecided it was time to continue her life away from her husband, she was left alone with four girls, no money or a steady job. The future couldn’t have looked bleaker and her hope for a happily ever after had become a faint memory from the past. She no longer trusted people or trusted that life could have a purpose other than raise her daughters. However, it all changed when Bassema decided that she wants to live the life she chose instead of the life people think a divorced woman must live.
Along with her four daughters, Bassema lived in a cozy and small apartment in a buildingoverlooking the ancient city of Nablus. When Bassema decided she wants to open her house to tourists and locals visiting Nablus, her extended family opposed her. Everyone she knew was against this idea because they didn’t trust strangers. Bassema refused to listen to them.
Her girls could see the spark and determination in their mother’s eyes and encouraged her not to give up. Bassema couldn’t be happier and prouder of herself for fighting the negativity and following her heart and the experience has changed her entirely. Bassemabegan to trust people again, became more social and outgoing, and had more faith in herself for winning the fight against stereotypes and her patriarchal society. Bassema succeeded in developing a positive approach to life.
This approach could be easily sensed the minute anyone walks into her small apartment. Almost everything in Bassema’s house is handmade in bright colors; the pillows, the tablecloth, the jewelry, the decoration and even the food have all been made with love and care. She would even shake hand and have in-depth conversations with strangers, a skill she didn’t master before.
Bassema did not get the chance to continue higher education for a university degree,thereforeshe made sure to keep learning new things everyday. Bassema’s main goal was to grow with her daughters. She made sure they graduated from college, because she understood the importance of higher education for women. Bassema dedicatesan entire wall in her living room to exhibit her daughter’s education certificates, because she considers their success to be her own as well.
As part of her learning journey, Bassema began taking courses and trainings in hosting tourists at her house. She was very keen to make sure that everything she learned would soon be implemented in her house. When Bassema got the chance to receive her first guest, she described the experience as life changing. When guests arrive in Nablus and stay at Bassema’s house, they will enjoy a comfortable and cozy stopover. She believes her guests will enjoy spending time with her and her daughters learning how to cook or even knit, but will also appreciate the privacy Bassema realizes must be provided to her guests.
Bassema is a big fan of Nablus where she grew up and is willing to share her passion touring the city with her guests and introducing them to her favorite shops, restaurants, historical sites and old streets.
